I’m sick of magical worlds with no technology. I want fairy run coffee shops where you can get a latte with a shot of charisma, because you’ve got a big presentation you’re worried about, or witches working at Apple selling phones that automatically appear in your pocket if you accidentally leave it somewhere, or psychics running hair salons who always know how you want your hair to look, or aura reader therapists. I just really want normalized magic in modern society

I've seen some people say they think Zelos is a virgin. What are your thoughts on that?

I’ve been asked this before, oddly enough, and I tend to go back and forth on it. People’s opinions tend to fall on an extreme scale of him either being a virgin or a sexual deviant. More often than not, whatever people seem to think Zelos’s sex life is like lines up pretty well to what side of him they prefer to base his character on (the mask or the “truth”). It’s easy to want to sit here and say “oh well, this this and this were cover ups for his inferiority so I think that he’s just talking so sexually to compensate” and that’s definitely an interpretation that has weight. It isn’t as though Zelos doesn’t lie about a lot of things. However, I personally don’t see that. I mean, I’ve used it in writings before. It’s a fun perspective to play with and it certainly adds another layer of angst to have the sad virgin parading as something completely different than himself.

But Zelos isn’t completely separated from his persona. He’s rebellious to the church and apathetic to most outside of it until the party intervenes in his life. Everything we hear about him pre-game sounds like he’s very much into manipulating people. And why wouldn’t he be? They haven’t been much good for him. His preoccupation with others’ opinions of him as a terrible person is based off of his actions a lot more than his words. I know people like the lying concept but, the thing about it, Zelos tends to use lies based on truths. I honestly don’t know that he could fake that part of himself to the degree that he does. I don’t believe he’s as deviant as he leads people to believe but I don’t think he’s a virgin. I don’t think it lines up. I’ve always found him to be too removed from people to have them effect him much in regards to physical affection so while the distrust of others leads to his isolation emotionally I don’t see that happening physically.

But obviously it’s interpretation. He’s complex so it depends on how you perceive him. Sometimes I feel like people use it so it’s easier to justify his behavior in relationships. It’s a lot easier to say “oh he lied about all of that misogynist bullshit and he’s really prince charming” than it is to say “this asshole once had an orgy with five other people and he still doesn’t remember their names.”

*APPLAUSE FOR GREAT CHARACTER ANALYSIS*

I love this complex bastard, but he is horribly flawed, and I think the last line says it all. Excusing his behaviors as all just lies is easier than dealing with Zelos’ shortcomings. But I think the game gives us plenty of evidence that Zelos isn’t completely BSing about his attitude towards women: His self hatred.

Zelos’ lies and fake persona are as much armor for himself as they are a way to manipulate others. It’s a form of escapism as much as it is a trick. Playing the fool makes it easy to manipulate and make others underestimate him. Pretending to be a shallow playboy also makes it easier to pretend that his emotional isolation doesn’t hurt, if only for a moment. I think it’s not outside the realm of possibility, perhaps even likely, that sex is just a temporary distraction for Zelos as much as it is part of his persona. He can’t have real intimacy, and so he plays at a meaningless mockery at it.

I know this is an interpretation of Zelos that some people shy away from because it makes him a problematic person. Using women (using anyone) is not ok, but it’s easy to see why Zelos would feel justified. People are always trying to use him for their own political purposes. His entire birth was unwanted but orchestrated. Why not use people if they’re all just going to use him?

What’s truly fascinating is that when Zelos FINALLY meets people who do care about him as a person, people who he may care for as well, we see the mask start to crumble, and what’s underneath isn’t so nice. The game hints at Zelos having something of a crush on Sheena, and he’s constantly HORRIBLE to her, the complete opposite of the charming prince he plays to other women, the women he DOESN’T care for. Zelos isn’t exactly kind to Lloyd all the time either, calling him an idiot and being disgusted by Lloyd’s naivety, and yet Zelos cares about what Lloyd thinks so much, that whether Zelos lives or dies depends on one line from Lloyd. Just one line!

While there could certainly be a case made for many interpretations of such a complex character, I definitely prefer to embrace the more problematic interpretation, as uncomfortable as it is. But that’s part of what I think makes his character so fascinating. Zelos IS uncomfortable. Zelos has AWFUL things about him, things that can’t be written off and ignored. And that’s why Zelos himself hates himself so much, and why it’s so crucial that in game that he either find acceptance and redemption, or rejection or condemnation.
